OCN Police Tripartite Agreement News Bulletin

Mission Statement
The Opaskwayak Cree Nation Police Department will work with the community to identify and address public safety issues and neighborhood concerns. We will establish an environment of shared ownership and responsibility using the following strategies:

  • Problem-oriented policing to identify problems and implement solutions.
  • A team approach to problem solving.
  • Continuous open evaluation to determine the effectiveness of our strategies.
  • To provide the community with the best possible police services within the financial capabilities of OCN.
  • To foster and maintain positive working relationships with other Government and Police Organizations to enhance the quality of life for OCN residents.
  • To provide an environment in which an individual police officer can produce and an environment that will meet the growing demands of our community.

We will strive for professionalism and integrity by maintaining high ethical and performance standards. Our policies and procedures will be designed to give simple, clear direction to all personnel.

We will encourage and support technological advances, training and professional skill development to enhance our effectiveness and to provide the safest possible environment for all Police Department staff. We will provide career growth opportunities for staff based on special interests and abilities that will increase the Department's effectiveness.

The Department will remain committed to a co-operative team effort between all members. We will encourage and provide support for employees to be pro-active and Flexible in identifying problems and solutions within the Department and the Community.

Core Values

1. Discretion
We will use discretion responsibly in the position we hold and exercise it within the law.

2. Use of Force
We will never employ unnecessary force or violence and will use only as much force as is necessary, in the discharge of our duty. Force will only be used only after the greatest restraint and only after discussion, negotiation and persuasion have been found to be inappropriate or ineffective.

3. Confidentiality
We believe that the public has a right to security and privacy, and information obtained about them must not be improperly divulged. Therefore, whatever we see, hear or learn will be kepI secret unless the performance of duty or legal provision required otherwise.

4. Integrity
We respect society's demand that the integrity of police officers be above reproach, therefore, we must avoid any conduct that might compromise integrity and thus undercut the public confidence in law enforcement.

5. Cooperation with Other Officers and Agencies
We will cooperate with all legally authorized agencies and their representatives in the pursuit of justice and practice respect and consideration for others at all times.

6. Personal/Professional Capabilities
We will be responsible for there own standard of professional performance and will take every reasonable opportunity to enhance and improve their level of knowledge and competence.

7. Private Life
We will behave in a manner that does not bring discredit to their Department or ourselves. A police officer's character and conduct while off duty must always be exemplary, thus maintaining a position of respect in the community in which we live and serve. An officer's personal behavior must be beyond reproach.
